Below is a list per bankrate.com of the most expensive automobiles to maintain (avg. annual costs over 5 years ending in 2008). In today’s competitive automobile industry, you would think most new cars should be competitive when it comes to maintenance and repair but this list says otherwise. Rather than buy one of these cars new, you might be better off buying one of these cars (if you have your heart set on them) used after they’ve been through their initial repair phase and buy an extended warranty to cover these costs.

1. Dodge Viper $10,323

2. Jaguar XK Series $9,449

3. Jaguar XJ Series $9,449

4. Land Rover Range Rover Sport $9,227

5. Land Rover Range Rover $ 8,996

6. Mercedes-Benz SL-Class $8,756

7. Mercedes-Benz-CL-Class $8,730

8. Land Rover LR3 $8,637

9. Audi RS4 $8,606

10. BMW Alpina B7 $8,534

I hope you found this maintenance and repair list informative.

Buy New Car or Keep An Old Car?

2011 September 14

Many people make the decision on whether to buy a new car or keep an old car more on an emotional level as opposed to a logical level. We tend to get caught up in the newness of an automobile in the showroom and that wonderful new car smell. We often then justify the purchase based on the very real possibility of having to make major repairs in the not too distant future. But let’s look for a minute at the facts surrounding buying a new car or keep an old car. Fact number one – New cars are quite expensive even if the dealer offers a low to zero interest rate. Having a payment of $400 to $600 or higher for 4 to 5 years is quite a hit to just about anyone’s budget. Fact number two – I’ve run the numbers (and you should too) and saving on repair costs can’t come close to justifying the cost of a new car today even if you throw in buying a new car to save on gasoline from a new car (partially offset by increased insurance and taxes). Lastly, if you’re worried about possible repair costs on your aging automobile, maybe the best or at least most cost effective solution is to get an extended warranty. Hey, you can always buy a can of new car smell at the local auto parts store, pretty cheap solution.
